To resize the windows and columns
- To resize the panes in the Internet Mail and News windows, move the pointer over the border of a pane, and when the pointer change to the resize pointer, drag the border to the location you want.
- To resize columns in the Internet Mail, Address Book, and Internet News windows, move the pointer over borders between the columns, and when the pointer changes to the resize pointer, drag the border to the location you want.

To change the columns displayed in windows
- From the Windows menu, choose Mail, Address Book, or News Messages, depending on which window you want to change.
- On the Edit menu, point to Columns.
- Click to place a check mark by each column you want displayed.
Tip
- If you want to change the order of the columns, remove the check mark from them all, and then check them again in the order you want the columns to appear.

To change your user information
- From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
- Click the User Profile tab.
- In the User Name box, type your first and last name.
- In the Email Address box, type your e-mail address.
- In the Organization box, type your company or department name.
- Click OK.

- The information you enter in the Identify area is used in the header and in the From box of messages.

To create a signature to add to your messages
- From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
- Click the User Profile tab.
- In the Signature area, type the information you would like to appear in every message you send.
- Click OK.

- Some of the information people put in their signature includes: name, job title, division and company, phone and fax numbers, or a quotation.

To turn alert sounds on or off
- From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
- Click the Messages tab.
- In the Sending and Receiving area, select or clear Play Alert Sounds depending on your preference.
- Click OK.
Tip
- Alert sounds play when sending a message, downloading mail, and when an error has occurred.
To compact mail folders to save hard disk space
- From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
- Click the Messages tab.
- In the Sending And Receiving area, select or clear Compact All Folders On Quit depending on your preference.
- Click OK.
Tip
- Mail messages are stored in a database that grows in size as you add, edit, and delete messages. Selecting Compact All Folders On Quit will delete any unneeded space and information in the database and make it smaller in size.

To change message enclosure encoding
- From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
- Click the Messages tab.
- In the Composing area, select an option for Encode Enclosures Using.
- Click OK.
Tips
- Use BinHex for sending a Macintosh file. This ensures that the two parts of the file, the resource fork and the data fork, do not get separated when the file is sent.
- Use UUEncode for sending datafiles to any computer. If you are sending a Macintosh file, be sure to use a program like Stuffit to convert the files to BinHex first.
- Base64 is a new standard that is available for compressing and sending files over the Internet.

To change the colors and symbol for read and unread messages
- From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
- Click the Display tab.
- In the Mail And News Messages area, change settings as needed.
- To mark unread messages as bold, choose Make Unread Messages Bold.
- To distinguish read and unread messages by using color, choose Mark Message Using Colors, and then click the color boxes to select new colors.
- To mark read messages with a symbol, choose Mark Read Message With, and enter the symbol you want to use.
- Click OK.

To change the colors and symbol for favorite newsgroups
- From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
- Click the Display tab.
- In the Newsgroups area, change settings as needed.
- To mark favorite newsgroups as bold, choose Make Favorite Newsgroups Bold.
- To distinguish favorite newsgroups by using color, choose Mark Newsgroups Using Colors, and then click the color boxes to select new colors.
- To mark favorite newsgroups with a symbol, choose Mark Favorite Newsgroups With, and enter the symbol you want to use.
- Click OK.

To change the fonts
- From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
- Click the Fonts tab.
- In the Lists And Tables area, the Messages area, and the Printing area, select a font on the pop-up list, and type a font size in the size box.
- Click OK.
Tip
- For best results, choose a font size between 9 and 14.
